With very little space in the yard and no space on the curbs outside to place equipment, logistical creativity was a must for the two large Iris Campus buildings of the Bill Gates Foundation World Headquarters.
A four-million-gallon Helix Water District water storage tank was scheduled to have an old coating of lead-based paint removed from its roof and support structure. The advent of summer also threatened to cause dangerously high temperatures inside the tank, creating worker safety concerns.
In late Summer of 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in the Gulf of Mexico region of Texas and Louisiana. In addition to the 100+ lives lost, the Category 4 hurricane triggered unprecedented flooding that inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, commercial and government buildings in Southeast Texas and surrounding areas.
Temperature and humidity controls ensure that stored materials are protected for future generations. For the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, it has become more difficult over the years, especially since the building was built in 1960, which means maintenance is much more difficult. Polygon was tasked with controlling the internal temperature levels without compromising the building structure.
While deadlines and project details may always seem tight, none seem tighter than those concerning school construction projects. Schools must follow environmental regulations during renovations and new construction to keep students and faculty safe from potential health risks. New masonry construction began at MacArthur Elementary School in New York during the summer, including the gymnasium, library, and three two-story classroom wings. With construction costs near $80,000,000, interior conditions must be maintained during construction to meet design specifications and stay on schedule.
